FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What masking tape is safe for cars?
A purpose-made automotive masking tape is the safe choice for cars. It uses a no residue adhesive designed for cured automotive paint, so it holds a clean line and lifts away without marking the surface. Avoid general packaging tapes, duct tape and Gorilla Tape on paintwork and consider a specialised JTAPE product.
Is automotive masking tape the same as regular masking tape?
No. Automotive masking tape is not the same as standard DIY masking tape. It is engineered for vehicle paint, with cleaner removal, sharper edge definition, better adhesion to curves and trims and heat resistant grades for spray booth and bake cycles. general use masking tape is built for flat, room temperature decorating jobs.
How long can you leave masking tape on a car?
Remove masking tape as soon as the job allows. On a vehicle, leaving tape in place too long, especially in heat or sunlight, lets the adhesive bond more tightly and degrade, which raises the risk of residue and marking.
As a rule, mask, paint and remove within the working session rather than leaving tape on for days.
What tape won’t leave residue on car paint?
A no residue automotive masking tape is designed to lift away cleanly without leaving adhesive behind. Residue is far more likely with cheap household tape, packaging tape or tape that has been left on too long or exposed to heat and sun.
Is Gorilla Tape safe for car paint?
No. Gorilla Tape and similar heavy duty tapes use an aggressive adhesive that can lift paint and leave heavy residue. They are not designed for paintwork. Use an automotive masking tape for any work on or near vehicle paint.
